Our History

The first organized East York Curling Club and its Board of Executives was established in 1960, with our first President, Hector Scott. As our current building was not yet built, the Board arranged to use the East York Memorial Arena one full day a week. One can imagine how challenging it was to try and curl amongst hockey lines! In 1964, the present Club building was under construction and by Christmas the first game of curling was played at the present location. With no washrooms yet available, a “Johnny-on-the-spot” was set up. Although the conditions of the club were still primitive, there was no shortage of excitement.

The official opening of the Club was on January 30, 1965 with the ceremonial first rock thrown by Alf Phillips, Sr. At that time, Jack Manley was our second President.

A significant highlight of the Club occurred in 1974. Under the direction of Dave Prentice, the East York Curling Club hosted the first Junior World Championships, sponsored by Uniroyal. We are proud to be known as the birthplace of the Junior World Championships. Even today, our most valuable Club Members are awarded the Dave Prentice Award; in recognition of the tremendous efforts that Dave took to bring the Juniors to East York.

For the 1986 World Championships, the Club was the official host for Team Sweden. Over the years, the annual Men’s Bulldog Bonspiel has attracted such players as Ed Werenich, two time World Champion, Mike Harris, Olympic Silver Medalist, Paul Savage, 1983 World Champion, Bob Turcotte, two time Senior National Champion.

The Club itself has had many successful curlers including Herb Kuroda, who along with Iris Empey won many City Mixed titles in the 70’s, through the ’90s. Iris Empey and Diane Stone won many Business Women’s Provincial titles in the ’70s and ’80s. Vic Suzuki won two Canada Life Trophies and made the 1992 Labatt’s Tankard Men’s Provincial Championship.

Over the years the Club has developed into a community, with the highlight of our season being the Annual Summer Spiel held in June. This spiel draws curlers from across the GTA and is a two-day event that has been tremendously successful.

Our Club is a City-owned facility which is run by a combination of City staff and volunteer boards at both the Club and League levels. The warmth of the Club has been generated by the countless hours of works by volunteers. Without their warmth and generosity, the success of the Club would not have been possible.

In 2010, we celebrated our 50th anniversary of the Club and enjoyed a number of events to bring some of the wonderful curlers back to the Club to share their special memories.

Have you ever wanted to try curling? Are you looking to host a unique corporate event, bonspiel or fundraiser? East York Curling Club is available for group rentals!

We offer 6 sheets of ice with a licenced lounge and the necessary equipment to meet your curling needs. Sheets are rented in two hour time slots, with the exception of Saturdays, which are booked in half or full-day blocks. Each sheet can hold a maximum of 8 people. We have wonderful coaches to help you play and enjoy the game - no experience required!

New to curling? Start here for some handy tips on how to prepare and play safely.

What to Wear

Helmets or headgear are highly recommended to prevent serious injury and are mandatory for curlers under 18 years of age.

Wear comfortable clothing that gives you a full range of motion for sweeping and sliding. Avoid clothing that sheds fibres or lint easily.

The ice shed is cold, but you’ll feel warmer as you play. Dress in layers to avoid overheating.

If you do not have curling shoes, wear a pair of clean running shoes. Do not wear them when travelling to the club - instead, carry them and change before entering the ice shed.

Wear grippers on both shoes to avoid slipping. Grippers may be available to borrow from the club. Ask the club manager or your league rep.

Ensure that your grippers are tight enough over your shoes (running shoes and curling shoes) that they will not fall off as you walk on the ice. Loose grippers can be a tripping hazard.

Safety on the Ice

Take a few minutes to stretch before entering the ice shed, to avoid muscle pulls and strains.

Take extra care when stepping onto the ice.

  • Always step onto the ice with a gripped shoe first.
  • Never step onto the ice with your ‘slider foot’.
  • Do not step on or off the ice over the rocks as this increases your chance of slipping and injuring yourself on the rocks or handles.

Moving on the ice

Walk, never run on the ice.

Use grippers on both feet when sweeping.

Carry your broom with the brush side down to help provide balance as you move on the ice.

When sweeping, only move as fast as you are comfortable moving. If the rock is moving too fast for you to keep up, stop sweeping and move to the side of the sheet.

Handling rocks

Never pick up a curling rock off of the ice surface. It is not required to lift the stone to deliver your shot, nor should rocks be lifted to move them around the sheet. Push rocks with your broom to move them safely.

Use your broom to stop moving rocks - never your hand as your fingers can be crushed between rocks.

Never use your feet to stop a fast-moving rock. You could lose balance and fall.

Delivering your rocks

Wait until your skip and sweepers are ready before throwing. Ensure no other players are in the path of where you intend to throw.

When using a step-on slider, push the slider away from your foot after releasing your rock so you have both gripped feet to stand.

Use your broom or stabilizer for balance when standing after delivery.

Healthy Curling

If you’re sick or recovering from an illness, find a spare to fill in until you are in good health.

Alcohol and drugs can affect your balance and make navigating the ice more difficult. Save the drink until after the game, or if necessary, sit out.
